What Makes a Good Leader?

What is a leader like? What qualities and characteristics should a girl or woman have to become a leader?

Make your own list. Fill in the blanks and print the list. Here is a start:

• Assertive
• Good listener

Do you know any women who have these qualities?

Contact a Leader

Do you know any women who are leaders in your community? Talking to them is a good way to learn about becoming leader. Women who are doing things you would like to do can let you know how to get in their position, what is great about their job and what challenges you might come across.

To find a women leader in your community:

• Contact city hall www.gov.edmonton.ab.ca
• Ask a parent or family friend
• Ask your coach, instructor or activity leader

Before you contact the leader, think about what you would like to say to them. Do some research and find out as much as you can about the person. Make a list of questions and take it with you to the interview so that you don't miss anything!

Here are some example questions:

• How did you get your job/position?
• What was the hardest part of getting the job/position?
• Who is your role model/hero?
• What advice do you have for me?
• What can I do now to prepare myself to become a leader?
